What is contemporary dance?

Contemporary dance was born at the beginning of the last century in America, in opposition to classical ballet. The great names of contemporary dance: Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham, Paul Taylor, Merce Cunningham, Alvin Ailey, Horton ...

In Europe, it has developed with Maurice Béjart, Carolyn Carlson, Pina Baush, JiriKilian, Philippe Découflé and many other living artists whose creations can be seen regularly.

Martha Graham was the first to establish the technique and vocabulary of contemporary dance, and she has trained many great American choreographers, each of whom has used some of her technique.

The Graham technique is the absolute reference, and remains the basis of most contemporary dance styles.

Contemporary dance uses all existing music.

What are the differences between the Graham technique and the Release technique?

The Graham technique is an academic technique, the basic reference for most contemporary techniques. Training in this technique helps to develop self-confidence, provides strong energy and promotes self-expression.

The release technique appeared in the 1990s. It is characterized by very fluid passages on the ground and requires less technical knowledge; it is easily accessible.

I want to start with Graham technique, which classes should I use?

To get started with Graham at classes , start with classes from floor barre with Maggie Boogaart (Mondays at 12:30 p.m.). The teacher will then guide you.
